McGregor Public Library Memorials & Donations Summer, 2012:

  • A bequest set out in the will of Rick Walters was made to the McGregor Public Library in 2010. Rick Walters’ generous gift to the library was made for library services and materials for children and adults. The Walters gift was recently put to an important use when the library ordered 10 years of microfilm of the North Iowa Times newspaper. This is a useful resource as every week visitors and local people research family and local history. The microfilm is also a historical record for our town. The library has microfilms of newspapers beginning with 1856.  There was a gap in 1989 and 1990 (which has now been filled), and the records were also updated from 2003 onward. Thanks to Rick Walters’ remembrance of the library for this lasting gift.
  • Kathleen Milewsky was devoted to family and community. She served on the McGregor Library Board for many years. She had a strong commitment to sharing her love of local history and her love of books for both enjoyment and learning.  Over the past month, the McGregor Library has received an outpouring of donations made in Kathleen’s memory by family and friends. These donations are being used to add dozens of new picture books for children, beginning chapter books for emerging readers, popular novels for adults, as well as a camera to photograph events and programs at the library. Among the books added are: “The St. Patrick’s Day Shillelagh”, “Frommer’s Ireland Day by Day”, “Tales from Old Ireland”, “Fiona’s Luck”, “Pete the cat and his four groovy buttons”, “The fantastic flying books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” and books from the best seller list: “Backfire” by Catherie Coulter”, “Fallen angel” by Daniel Silva, “The Sandcastle Girls” by Chris Bohjalian, “When in doubt add butter” by Beth Harbison, “Secret daughter” by Shilpi Gowda, “Where we belong by Emily Griffin”, “The Next best thing” by Jennifer Weiner, and “Kisses from Katie” by Katie Davis. Thank you to all those who made donations to the McGregor Public Library in Kathleen's honor.
  • Donations were made to the McGregor Public Library in honor of Dr. Don Pfeiffer’s many years of medical service and as a thank you for his dedication to the people of our communities. A flag award with an award case built by Pete Eggen was presented, and a gift to the McGregor Library was made in Dr. Pfeiffer’s name. The following books were added with nameplates honoring Dr. Pfeiffer:  James Patterson’s “I, Michael Bennett”; “The 500: by Michael Quick; “The Storm” by Clive Cussler; “Creole Belle” by James Lee Burke; “Fireproof” by Alex Kava; “Night Watch” by Linda Fairstein; and “The Last Minute” by Jeff Abbott.
  • Memorials for Jack Slyfield were sent by Shannon, Skip and Dawn Slyfield, Larry and Anita Cox, and friends and family of Jack Slyfield.   The McGregor Library has added the books: “The Little Airplane” by Lois Lenski, “The Noisy Airplane Ride” by Mike Downs, “Potboiler” by Kellerman, “The Age of miracles” by Karen Thompson Walker, “Ransom River” by Meg Gardiner, and “The Good Dream” by Donna VanLiere in memory of Jack Slyfield.
  • John Yates was McGregor Library’s on-hand historian for many years. He shared articles and photographs, uncovered interesting facts in his microfilm searches, and answered numerous questions.  We miss him at the library. Donations were made in memory of John from Donna Thompson, Dan and Marsha Bickel, Jenny Gordon and Herb Collins, Michelle Pettit, Larry and Anita Cox, Utoni Ruff, the MFL MarMac School,  Bona Dean Feller, Adam and Erica Rocksvold, David and Carolyn Scott, Frank and Sandy McMillin, Gene Milewsky, and the family and friends of John Yates.

  • Don and Ruth Brus gave a donation which was used to purchase two Amish book series by Beverly Lewis: The Judgment, The Mercy, and the Thorn (in large print) and The Covenant and The Sacrifice in regular print. The Brus gift was also used to add the book “Flowers by Algernon” and the DVD “Charly”.
  • Esther Merritt, Bob Eggen, and Elizabeth Brownson gave donations in memory of Warner Martin, Class of 1947. The National Geographic book “Face to Face with Wolves”, the children’s classic “Hubert’s hair-raising adventure” by Bill Peet and the novel “Nightwoods” by Charles Frazier have been added in Warner’s memory.
  • Harry and Dorene Larson and Mike and Joanne Carroll donated in memory of Delmar Gingrich.  The book “The Bipilo Seed : and other rarely seen stories” by Dr. Seuss has been added in memory of Delmar.
  • Joe and Julie Breckler donated in memory of Tony Hendrickson. Their gift was put towards the interlibrary loan program, enabling the library to provide books borrowed from other libraries to patrons.
  • Jenny Gordon gave a donation that was used to add the DVD movies “The Muppets” and “Hugo” and the book, “The Courage to Write” by Ralph Keyes.
  • Jo Ann Van gave a donation in memory of Eleanor Brown. The books “Sonoma Rose” by Jennifer Chiavernini, “Living Sunlight: How Plants bring the Earth to Life” by Molly Bang, and the Jodi Picoult novel “Lone Wolf” have been added in Eleanor’s memory.
  • Phil and Diane Reisweber and Laura Nozal gave donations in memory of Jack Slyfield. The biography of Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson and the novel “The Thief: an Isaac Bell Adventure” by Clive Cussler have been added in memory of Jack.
  • A special thanks for the donation of time and expertise by Joe Chiaramonte and Gene Riley when they came in last month and fixed the shelves that were falling down in the library’s office. It is great to have our bookshelves back and holding up all the local history binders again.
